Thank You, Sister
This memoir of Jennifer Craig covers her years from age five to her reception of a letter, at age eighteen, of application to be a student nurse at Leeds General Infirmary. Thus, it is a prequel to Yes Sister, No Sister: My Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire. Published by Kindle, 2020.
Jennifer suffered burns to much of her body when she was five, just after war broke out. The memoir details her recollections of her 20 months in Stroud Hospital, time spent in Randwick Vicarage, growing up in a slum in Leeds, enduring three skin grafts in her teens, learning to appreciate the humanity in disfigured people, and finally two years in Bombay, India, eating un-rationed food, swimming lengths and diving from three-metre spring boards. These sun-filled two years enabled her to come to terms with her body image, gain health and become physically fit.
